니콜라이 야로쉔코, 죄수

생기넘치는 여학생 초상화 두점을 소개해드렸던 야로쉔코의 또다른 작품입니다. 느낌이 많이 다르지요?
과로와 스트레스와 쉼없는 야근 때문에 저 그림에 한없이 감정이입되고 있습니다 ㅠㅠ

이 그림을 보면 제가 무척 사랑하는 작가인 오스카 와일드의 장시 '레딩감옥의 발라드'가 생각납니다.
동성애 죄목으로 레딩감옥에 투옥되었던 와일드가 그곳을 배경으로 쓴 장시인데 이 시는 정말 너무나 아름답고 슬퍼서 가끔 가만히 몇 소절을 되뇌고 있으면 가슴을 후비는 것 같아요.

위의 그림을 보고 있으면 특히 1장의 이 소절이 생각나죠

I never saw a man who looked

With such a wistful eye

Upon that little tent of blue

Which prisoners call the sky,

And at every drifting cloud that went

With sails of silver by


제가 가장 좋아하는 부분은 1장과 마지막장에 되풀이되는 이 부분

Yet each man kills the thing he loves,

By each let this be heard,

Some do it with a bitter look,

Some with a flattering word,

The coward does it with a kiss,

The brave man with a sword!

Some kill their love when they are young,

And some when they are old;

Some strangle with the hands of Lust,

Some with the hands of Gold:

The kindest use a knife, because

The dead so soon grow cold.

Some love too little, some too long,

Some sell, and others buy;

Some do the deed with many tears,

And some without a sigh:

For each man kills the thing he loves,

Yet each man does not die.


시가 좀 길지만 정말 아름다운데, 분량 때문에 전부 올릴 수가 없네요. 관심 있는 분들은 The Ballade of Reading Gaol, Oscar Wilde 로 구글링하시면 텍스트 전문을 찾아 읽으실 수 있을 거예요.

지금은 옛날만큼 와일드에 빠져 있진 않지만, 그래도 전 여전히 그의 아름다운 글들을 좋아해요. 특히 이 레딩감옥의 발라드는 그 특유의 유미주의적인 작품들과는 조금 느낌이 달라요. 훨씬 절절하고 훨씬 더 사실적이면서도 슬퍼요.
